There had been a BBQ party going with over a dozen people standing around, for maybe five or six hours, when I came outside, at 10 PM, and sat down in my car, to listen to the radio, and catnap. Maybe 30 minutes later, someone started shining an extremely bright flashlight around the outside and inside of my car, and, sitting up, I discovered that the Fortuna police were on the premises. They asked me to roll down my window and talk to them. I saw that there were four policemen on the premises. I told them how glad I was to see them! I don't think they expected that. They told me that the people in Building 1 had complained that I was video-recording their BBQ. (I suspect the accusation was more graphic. I surmise that my accusers complained that I was a child molester, and was videotaping their babies, for unspeakable future uses. I say this because someone in the apartment complex made a similar accusation against my brother, half a year or so ago ... and because people in the apartment complex made a similar accusation against Alan Attar ... and, because at least one of the residents of the apartment complex has been subpoenaed to appear, and testify against Alan, tomorrow. Also, because I overheard the BBQers talking, loudly, about what they would do to some unnamed person if this person WERE filming their poor, innocent children, after the police left - and inferred that they were referring to me.) I denied this; I told them that I was sitting in my car, listening to classical music on the radio, and that no one had said anything to me, nor had I said anything to them - not a syllable had been exchanged. I explained I was protecting my vehicles from being vandalized, and pointed out the tire that had been stabbed, only 24 hours before, ten feet away. I opined to the officers that stabbing tires was a substitute for stabbing people and that perhaps the act of stabbing should be treated more seriously - that they were dismissing an explicit threat of physical violence against me as mere vandalism, but that I was not prepared to treat it so briefly. I pointed out one of the vehicles parked in the parking lot - the large 4WD pickup - and told the officers that this vehicle had been parked in my space, all yesterday, while I had been gone, and that for this reason I suspected the owner of the pickup truck of being involved in the stabbing of my tire. I pointed out that the people who were complaining were not residents of the apartment complex, and pointed out, also, that they were not supposed to be parking in the complex, in the first place. The police officer noted that he had no control over that - as we all know - but that also reminded him that there was an onsite manager, so he returned to the complaining parties and explained, to them, that Photography Is Not A Crime - or so I infer, for several of the people then came over and stood around my car and tried to take pictures of me, in my car, in the poor lighting, with their cheap cell phones. The police left, and, unsatisfied, the BBQers then went and woke up Joe, the onsite manager, to get him to Do Something. I told Joe the police had already been called, been onsite, and left. Apparently the people from Building 1, knocking on his door at 10:45 in the evening, had left that detail out. I also pointed out that there were two vehicles parked right in front of him that did not belong to residents, and that he should order them to move their vehicles, as THEY were causing the problem. Joe told me he had not been aware that my tire had been slashed. But I do not blame him, because he is not paid to patrol the premises on an hourly basis and look for things like that - there is no onsite security, not even a camera. Joe has asked me to move one of my cars, because, apparently, the people in Building 1 thought it was unfair that I, who have two cars, should be able to park them both in the otherwise empty lot ... and they, who have NO cars, should not be able to park their friends' cars, wherever THEY want. I had already moved my cars off the premises, when the Klammes moved ... but my wife brought one of the cars back, because she thought it was safe. We see, now, that it is STILL not safe for me to park my cars here when I am not here. And so I will be moving one of my cars off the premises - as soon as I have the time to get the tire replaced. I suggest that PPM not tag my car, or have it towed, in the interval, until I have time to address this. Sincerely, ~richard
