It's a three-step process ... lock the top bolt, twist the knob to make sure the knob is locked, then press the door inwards until I hear the door knob's spring-loaded latch click into the latchhole. I do it a few dozen times every day. This morning the door was unlocked. Both knobs. It's barely possible that I forgot to lock the door after I came in, that last time, but that would be about as likely as me forgetting to close the door when I come in. What seems more likely is that someone came by with a master key and quietly unlocked the door - testing the master key, perhaps, but also sending me a message. There's a possibility I can catch this person with a camera but that means that another target will have to go unwatched, as I do not have more than one camera at this time. One of my daughters was sleeping in the living room last night. They are lucky she did not awaken. I think I'm going to start sleeping in the hallway, by the front door. I foresee mayhem. Ambulances. Maybe a coroner. Changing the locks and rendering the old master keys useless is about the only thing you can do to stop this. It's obvious to me that the keys have passed through many untrustworthy hands; and stamping "DO NOT COPY" is not a universal panacea, in a world where keys have serial numbers, locksmiths can be bought off, key-copying machines and blanks can be had cheaply on eBay, 3D printing is rapidly expanding to fill this niche, and the county is filled to the brim with criminals and ne'er-do-wells (I never thought I'd have a use for that phrase, until now).
