I have a half a dozen text messages from him that are pretty crazy. They mention cockroaches. I think he was referring to bedbugs. I think the bedbugs drove him crazy. I thought you'd appreciate knowing this, seeing as you will be handling his defense. Over the past two or three weeks I have been fiercely agitating for the management of the apartment to do something after my wife and I diagnosed bedbugs in our apartment and a little questioning finally, grudgingly, revealed that there had recently been an infestation of bedbugs in our apartment. The management has been sloooowly responding but it's mostly been protecting themselves from blame - and so I can see how someone less stable and less solidly connected to the local community and its resources might lose it. Here's a snapshot: Accurate Exterminator, of Fortuna, confirmed they are bedbugs. An inspector from the county confirmed they were bedbugs. City of Fortuna thinks they are bedbugs. Woods Extermination thinks they are bedbugs. Terminex thinks they are bedbugs. The County Department of Agriculture thinks they are bedbugs. Professional Pest Management was seeking a second opinion as of a few days ago. By my calculations PPM is approximately 2000 (TWO THOUSAND) times less responsive than the county department of agriculture. I can see how someone might go postal, in circumstances like those. If you talk to Alan ... tell him I have his jacket. The nice one, from Argentina. I'll save it for him. He threw it out the window. As far as I know, his apartment is sealed, and nobody is going in or out. But I'd fumigate the apartment, before I went in there. It's pretty dank, from what I saw. It's likely that the bedbug problem was made much worse by the woman he was living with, who was always bringing stuff home. They might have fought about it. This may have contributed to the restraining order that she got against Alan - that is, she was creating a health and safety problem, and it drove him justifiably crazy. Frankly, the concealment of the bedbug problem has mushroomed into a huge issue. The police response to Alan's breakdown involved four FPD, three CHP, and two unmarked police vehicles, with at least 10 or 12 officers, armed with M16s. That was expensive. And it's turning out that EVERY SINGLE BUILDING is infested. It's a major failure of public health. Someone should be punished. I'm not sure Alan Attar is that person, though.
