23-year-old Berkeley native Hersh Goldberg-Polin was at the Saturday music festival near the Gaza Strip that was invaded by Hamas militants, and he is believed to have been taken hostage.
It's being reported that at least 11 Americans were killed in this weekend's Hamas attack on Israel, with an unknown number of Americans among those taken hostage by Hamas. And on Saturday, the Jewish News of Northern California reported that 23-year-old Berkeley native Hersh Goldberg-Polin is believed to be among those hostages. According to that publication, Goldberg-Polin attended the music festival attacked by Hamas, and his parents heard from him Saturday morning in WhatsApp messages saying "I love you," and "I'm sorry."
Tuesday morning, Goldberg-Polin's parents confirmed more details about his disappearance at a press conference. Goldberg-Polin, who was born in Berkeley and moved to Israel at age 7, sent more detailed messages to his parents amidst the chaos of the attack. According to his father Jon Polin, the young man and his friends fled to a bomb shelter when "masked gunmen attacked," and Goldberg-Polin reportedly lost an arm trying to fend off the attack.
"As grenades were being thrown in, they were tossing them back out," the father Polin said, basing his account on what he's heard thus far from other eyewitnesses.
His mother Rachel Goldberg added, "We know his arm was severed from the elbow-down, blown off." Accounts they have heard indicate Goldberg-Polin used a shirt to fashion a tourniquet to tie around his arm.
His last-known whereabouts were at the Israel-Gaza border, according to cell phone signals. Again citing eyewitness accounts, Goldberg said her son was "put on a pickup truck and driven away by Hamas."
The tragedy has also touched Berkeley with one of those American deaths. KTVU also reports that the nephew of Rabbi Yonatan Cohen of Congregation Beth Israel, Yoav Malayev, was also killed in Saturday's attacks. Malayev was a member of the Israel Defense Forces.
He was 19.

Comment: We don't mean to be mean but we think this narrative is a premeditated lie, from start to finish.
According to the storyline, Bad Arabs tried to kill Nice Jewish Boy, who sacrificed himself defending other Jews. Boo fucking hoo.
If you think about this sequence of events for a few seconds - bad guy throws grenade, good guy throws it back, bad guy throws another grenade, it goes off and good guy is disabled - what happens next? Bad guy kills good guy. That's why he was throwing grenade after grenade after grenade! Nothing else makes sense.
But this is not what happened. Bad guy puts tourniquet on good guy and takes him prisoner, after supposedly throwing seven or eight lethal grenades. Why doesn't bad guy draw a sidearm and shoot everyone? Hmm? Wasn't that the whole idea - to kill everyone and leave the floor covered with blood?
See? It just doesn't fit. Something is missing - the truth.
Now that we know what didn't happen ... here's what did happen.
Arabs invaded. Jewish dude, age 23, had military experience invading and killing Arabs and so he naturally thought they would do the same to him. He panicked and ran and hid with a bunch of other brave Jewish fighters.
Arabs said, come out and surrender, we won't hurt you.
Jewish dude didn't believe them, because that's exactly the sort of thing he said to Arabs to draw them out to where he could kill them. We surmise that Jewish dude had a guilty conscience.
Arabs tossed in a smoke bomb or maybe some tear gas. Jewish dude threw them back out. Arabs did this a couple more times.
Growing impatient, Arabs then kicked it up a notch and tossed in a flash-bang, probably - not a real grenade, or Jewish dude would have been killed. Jewish dude and everyone else in there with him, surrendered.
Arabs took them prisoner and bandaged up the would-be hero and took him, too. Nobody got shot. Nobody got killed. Everyone got prompt medical treatment.
Hero didn't lose his arm, either - that's just more hasbara (Hebrew for "bullshit") from weaklings so accustomed to posturing as victims that they literally cannot stop themselves from exaggerating their injuries at every single opportunity.
We don't have ESP - we just assume the Jews are lying, reverse everything, and see if it makes more sense than whatever steaming pile of bullshit they tried to serve us with. It usually does.
We've met men who grew up in Berkeley and they weren't weaklings or liars - just sayin', associating this would-be hero with Berkeley, California doesn't do Berkeley any good at all.
Now that we know that SFist carries water for the Bay Area Jewish community we will view their articles, and especially their restaurant reviews, as similarly biased.
